To halt digestion processes in digested sludge from effluent treatment plants, which processes are associated with the formation of foul-smelling gases, after the last digestion stage digested sludge is recirculated many times between a reactor, in which oxygen, for example in the form of air, is added to the digested sludge, and a storage vessel which is provided downstream of the last digestion tower of the digestion stage. The mixture thus obtained is partially dewatered, for example to 25% by weight dry matter content, and transported to a drying plant in transport vessels in which ventilation may be performed again. Because of the low odour pollution, the expenditure which is required to remove odour-polluting gases from the drying plant exhaust air is significantly lower.

|
