17 - Esters of 17a - ethynyl - 18 - methyl-19 - nor - testosterones with organic carboxylic acids are obtained by esterifying 17a -ethynyl-18 - methyl - 19 - nor - testosterone in basic reaction medium with an organic carboxylic acid or with a reactive derivative thereof and, if desired, hydrolysing the resulting 3,17b -diester of 17a -ethynyl-18-methyl-19-nor-testosterone to form the corresponding 17b -monoester. Alternatively, the 17b -monoester may be obtained by protecting the 3-keto group of 17a - ethynyl - 18 - methyl - 19 - nor - testosterone during the esterification. Pharmaceutical compositions having progestative properties and containing the above esters are administered orally or parenterally.
