PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polling method for an optical waveguide with which a large electro-optical constant is obtainable and the damage of metallic thin- film electrodes is averted by irradiating these electrodes with radiations at the time of impression of high voltage. SOLUTION: The entire part of the optical switch 10 is irradiated withγrays 31 generated by the decay of cobalt atom nuclei from a radiation generator 30 while a DC high voltage of 3000V is impressed on the optical switch 10 from a high-voltage power source 20. Electrons and holes are extremely efficiently generated in a glass network and large electric polarization is induced in the quartz optical waveguide when the optical waveguide is irradiate with the radiation while the high voltage is impressed between the electrodes arranged near the optical waveguide. Consequently, the optical waveguide having the large electrooptical constant is produced. The radiations, such asγrays and X-rays, transmit the metallic thin-film electrodes of a thickness of about 1μand, therefore, the shielding of the radiations by the electrodes and the damage of the electrodes do not arise. |
