The treatment of oil-contg. waste water, esp. the sepn. of oil-in-water emulsions, comprises mixing the oil-in-water emulsions with demulsifier(s) and subsequently treating the mixt. electrolytically using self-consuming metal anodes. Also claimed is a device for sepg. oil-in-water emulsions comprising a first container for mixing the emulsions with demulsifier(s), a downstream electrolysis cell and opt. a flotation settling tank, each with corresp. inlets and outlets.
