In a process for the production of phenols an aromatic hydrocarbon is oxidized in the liquid phase by a gas containing free oxygen in the presence of formic acid and a transition metal catalyst. Transition metals specified include ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, platinum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel and molybdenum and these may be carried on conventional supports. The catalyst may be freshly precipitated metal or a compound soluble in the reaction mixture may be employed. An alkali metal carboxylate may be present in the reaction system. Preferred solvents for use in the process include aliphatic carboxylic acids e.g. formic or acetic acid. The examples describe the preparation of phenol from benzene and cresol from toluene. |
