PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium excellent in magnetic characteristics, durability and corrosion resistance by providing a process for forming a metallic magnetic thin film on a substrate by a dry plating means and a process for dipping the substrate with the formed metallic magnetic thin film in a lipophilic liq. SOLUTION: Nonmagnetic polyester is generally used as the material of a substrate 3. An undercoat layer for improving the adhesion of a magnetic layer is formed on the substrate 3 if necessary. The adhesion of a magnetic thin film formed by diagonal vapor deposition is improved by moderately roughening the surface of the substrate 3. A magnetic metal 6 put in a crucible 5 is, e.g., a Co-Ni alloy besides Fe. The substrate 3 is allowed to run in zigzag in a liq. vessel 9 adjacent to a vacuum vessel 8. The vessel 8 is evacuated to 2×10<-5> Torr, the metal 6 in the crucible 5 is evaporated by resistance heating or other method and the resultant vapor is deposited on the substrate 3 to obtain a recording medium.
