The invention comprises the water-soluble monoazo dyes of formula wherein X is a hydrogen, sodium or potassium atom. The dyes are prepared by the usual coupling procedure using appropriate components or by treating the corresponding dye having in meta-position to the azo group a 2-hydroxyethyl-sulphone residue with sulphuric acid. The dyes give red shades on wool, silk, leather, synthetic polyamides and polyurethanes and natural and regenerated cellulose. Examples describe the preparation of the dyes by both processes.
