PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material with a large weight and strength and a structure for use in a short range hypersonic missile, and a manufacturing method thereof. SOLUTION: A surface protected composite 40 such as a missile member includes a substrate 42, a first composite layer 44 of a preceramic matrix structure composite material, and a second composite layer 46 of a reinforced silicone prelamic material. Silicone of the surface 48 of the composite 40 is converted to a silica heat resistant material with a proper processing such as exposure to oxygen rich plasma or exposure to higher surface temperature. The silica protects the surface of the composite material.
