A shotgun cartridge formed from polyethylene or a co-polymer thereof with up to 10% of anotherα-olefine having a density in the range 0 94 to 0À965 and a melt index below 7, comprises a tubular wall 1 and an integral base 2 having a rim 3 which is covered by an annular metal member 4 of such a thickness that it is not liable to deformation by an extractor and magazine cartridge retaining member whilst supported by the rim but if not supported would be liable to deformation. The metal member may be formed of brass having a thickness from 0À004 to 0À006 inch, or of nickel silver having a thickness from 0À003 to 0À005 inch. A preferred melt index for the plastics portion of the case is 0À1 to 5, preferably 0À1 to 1À2. In an example, a case made from injection moulded linear polyethylene having a density of 0À96 and a melt index of 0À2, has a tubular wall diameter of 0À790 inch and a 0À005 inch thick brass member 4. The plastics portion of the case may be made by blow- or injection-moulding and the metal member 4 is formed as a cupshaped member which is progressively formed over the rim 3 by means of a press.</p> |
