The sensing system is installed near a feed trough or other installation used for the animals, e.g. milking stalls. In a typical milking parlour, fencing rails (1) separate the animals during milking. At one end of the stall is a feed tray (2). Above the feed trough is an angled plate (4) with an aperture in its centre. At the rear of the aperture, a funnel (5) and pipe (6) are connected to an extraction fan (7). The air is fed to a sensor (9). The sensor output is fed to a computer which analyses the signals. In addition to identifying the animal, the system is also used to detect when the animal is in oestrus or is suffering from some diseases.
