PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized picture displaying method and the picture display device using a method in which an observer can observe high quality stereoscopic pictures or a high quality flat picture having no flicker while the observer putting on a polarizing spectacles as they are. SOLUTION: A right parallactic picture or a left parallactic picture constituting a flat picture or stereoscopic pictures are displayed on the display 1 emitting the display light of a linear polarized light and the first phase shifting member 32A and the second phase shifting member 32B applying one polarized state among two different polarized states to the display light in front of the display 1, by electric signals are provided. At the time the observer observes a picture to be displayed on a display 1 via a first phase shifting member 32A or a second phase shifting member 32B while the observer is fitting a polarizing spectacles 2 composed of two polarizing plates 2R, 2L whose polarizing axies are made orthogonal to his eyes, the electric signals impressed on the first phase shifting member 32A and the second phase shifting member 32B are controlled in accordance with the kind of pictures to be displayed. |
