PURPOSE: To discriminate the area of image with a high extraction rate in spite of colors in the image area. CONSTITUTION: A block dividing part 20 divides image data for the unit of a picture element block in a prescribed size. The picture element block is transformed to the respective spatial data of YUV by a YUV transforming part and orthogonally transformed by the next DCT part. The transformed data of Y component are supplied to a coefficient arithmetic part 23 and here, a feature amount is decided. Besides, the orthogonally transformed result of U and V components is supplied to a hue detection part 25 and here, the hue of the concerned picture element block is detected. When the hue is decided, based on this result, a threshold setting part extracts a threshold from a threshold table 27 and outputs it to an attribute discriminating part 24. The attribute discriminating part 24 compares the feature amount of the concerned picture element block from the coefficient arithmetic part 23 with the threshold from a threshold setting part 26 and discriminates whether the concerned block is a character area block or not. |
