To determine the mechanical characteristics of paper, the fibre quality of the paper is registered by online measurement during the papermaking process, esp. directly within the papermaking machine. Also claimed is an appts. in which the paper web (100) passes through an initial channel (A) which applies a tracer to the paper web (100). It then passes through a second channel (B) where the web (100) is subjected to air. The measurement head (10), with a pump (12), is over the paper web (100).
