Apparatus (10) for extracting air from a room to the exterior comprises a first fan (16) adapted to draw air into the apparatus from the room through a first air inlet (24), duct means (14) for removing said air to the exterior, a smoke detector (28) operatively connected to said first fan to switch the first fan on upon activation of the smoke detector, a second fan (20) adapted to recirculate air through a second air inlet/outlet (26) and means for dispensing fragance and/or deodoriser (22) into said recirculating air.
