A device for protection against overload of switching contacts (22, 23) of a switching device (6) is provided with an energy converter (5) situated in the vicinity of the switching contacts (22, 23) and exposed to electromagnetic radiation produced by an arc between the switching contacts. If the switching contacts (22, 23) are electrodynamically separated by overload, the energy converter disconnects the circuit with the aid of, for example, the triggering magnet (1) of a power switch (6).
