[Also in Division B3] A rolling mill or calender includes a brake for the rolls which is applied, when a manually or automatically operated emergency stop device is actuated, for cutting off the power supply to the rolls. The lower roll 2 is hydraulically adjustable by piston-cylinder units 8, 9 relative to the roll 1, springs 6, 7 urging the rolls apart. The units are supplied from a low pressure pump 10 and also from manually or power-operated pumps 13, 14 for providing fine roll adjustment. Valves 25, 26 and 27 are opened by manual application of the emergency stop device to release the fluid pressure in the units 8, 9 and in a brake 17. The springs 6, 7 thereby urge the rolls apart, and the brake is applied by springs to slow down the rolls. The valves are also operated in the event of sensors 28, 29 detecting a pressure overload condition on the rolls, and in this case the sensors can be used to automatically operate the stop device. |
