A die-set for pressing sheet-metal, e.g. motor vehicle bodies, comprises a facing of sheet metal (22, 23, Fig. 3) for each die and a rigid backing (25, 26) for the facing. The die-set is made from a plaster mould (11, Fig. 1) of the desired surface formed after first building up the surface with a facing of wax of the same thickness as that of the facing sheet. A sandwich is made of two metal plates (12, 13), to be formed into the facings (22, 23), and a sheet 14 of the thickness of the pressings to be formed. The sandwich is formed by an explosion or an electric discharge, under water, against the mould (Fig. 2). Stainless steel facings (22, 23) may then be backed by concrete (25, 26), or tooling plastics material may back facings of stainless-steel, titanium or berylium, or caststeel may be used to back facings of titanium or berylium. The facings may be secured to the backing by bolts or by adhesion during setting of the backing material. |
