The load bearing building component has a pair of elongated wood-type chord pieces, and plywood piece joining these together with glued tongue and groove joints. The plywood piece (14) has two or more layers of veneer wood (15, 16) with grain at right angles to the length of the chord pieces (10, 11), and an intervening layer (17) with grain the other way. The outside layers extend at two opposite edges, to form a pair of parallel bendable lugs (21, 22) at each edge, and pair of lengthways grooves in each chord piece. The grooves slope together from top to bottom, to bend the lugs towards each other and produce a self-locking dovetail joint when the chord pieces are pressed onto the solid piece.
