<p>An apparatus for welding sheets of material, such as automobile body parts (11, 11'), by modular clamps (12). Each modular clamp (12) includes a lower plate (14) and an upper plate (16) movable relative to lower plate (14) by an actuator arm (30) under the control of a computer (70). Each clamp (12) also has a fiber optic cable (18) and a slot (28) to allow the edges to be laser welded together. The welding operation is carried out by a focussing head (26) with a motor to drive a focus lens relative to a recollimating lens. A laser beam source (22) has a time share distributor (72) to supply the beam to the fiber optic cables (18) in sequential fashion.</p> |
