PURPOSE: To decrease the inner shear torque of a clutch so as to reduce shock upon speed change, and to further make an automatic transmission compact. CONSTITUTION: In an automatic transmission T, an input shaft 14, a speed change mechanism M, an output shaft 15, two clutches C-1, C-2 for driving and coupling the above-mentioned components, and hydraulic servos therefor are incorporated in a transmission casing 10 so as to provide multiple forward shift stages. Hydraulic servos 3, 4 are embedded in walls 10a, 10b of the transmission casing, the speed change mechanism M being interposed therebetween, which are isolated from the clutches C-1, C-2, and the pressing forces for engaging the clutches is transmitted through bearings 32, 42. Thereby it is possible to reduce the inertial torque of a rotary member belonging to the speed change mechanism M while making the transmission compact.
