Process for preparing intermediates for the synthesis of dichloro-substituted derivatives having antifungal activity. New process for the preparation of 2-[2-(3,5- dichlorophenyl)ethyl]benzoic acid (II) and 2,4-dichloro-10,11- dihydro-5H-dibenzo [a, d] cycloheptene-5-one (III), which comprises alkylation of the dianion with lithium of 2-methyl- benzoic acid for a 3,5-dichlorobenzyl halide (I) and intramolecular cyclization of the acid (II) obtained in this way using polyphosphoric acid. The 2,4-dichloro-10,11-dihydro- 5H-dibenzo[a,d] cyclohepten-5-one (III) is useful as an intermediate in the preparation of 1-(2,4-dichloro-10,11- dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]-cyclohepten-5-yl)-1H-imidazole, which has antifungal activity. <IMAGE>
