In a packet switched radio modem having a transmitter subsystem, fast transmitter turn on times are realized while minimizing battery power consumption by the transmitter subsystem. By enabling all frequency determining elements and possibly some of the buffer amplifiers prior to the pre-driver and power amplifier stages, it is possible to allow the device frequency determining elements to stabilize to the 'on frequency' condition. When the actual transmission is made, only the pre-driver and power amplifier stages are actually enabled. In this way, very fast transmitter turn on times can be realized. These turn on times are typically sub-millisecond. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, frequency determining elements of a device including a transmitter subsystem are enabled prior to initiating a transmission, and the transmitter subsystem is disabled when the device has no packets to transmit.
|
