<p>The present invention provides an improved process for treating a surface in order to inhibit or prevent the surface from causing blood to clot or coagulate on or at the surface as well as novel compositions used in the practice of the improved process. The present process is particularly adapted for coating polymeric surfaces which directly contact blood and blood products. The process includes sequentially contacting the surface with i) a water soluble polyalkylene amine and a water soluble diepoxide, ii) an anionic compound and iii) a water soluble polyalkylene amine to give a primed surface. The primed surface is then contacted with an antithrombotic agent and a reducing agent to covalently bind the antithrombotic agent to the primed surface.</p> |
