A mercury cell for the electrolysis of an alkali metal salt solution is U-shaped and comprises first and second elongated chambers 21, 22 and a third arcuate chamber 25 interconnecting one <PICT:1065381/C6-C7/1> pair of adjacent ends thereof; the other end of the first chamber 21, which slopes downwardly towards the arcuate chamber being provided with a mercury inlet 23, the other end of the second chamber 22, which slopes downwardly from the arcuate chamber being provided with an amalgam outlet 24, and the arcuate chamber being formed with a banked bottom, whereby the mercury/ amalgam can flow smoothly from the inlet 23 to the outlet 24 via the arcuate chamber 25. In the embodiment described, the banked bottom of the arcuate chamber 25 forms a continuous surface whose generatrix passes through the point, C, at the end of the partition wall 39 between the elongated chambers 21, 22 and whose slope decreases from the edge adjacent the first chamber 21 to the edge adjacent the second chamber 22, the fixed point being the lowest part of the surface, Fig. 10 (not shown). The elongated chambers 21, 22 may be connected to the arcuate chamber by shoulders 26, 27 respectively Figs. 11, 12 (not shown), and the bottom plates of the chambers may be formed with grooves 35b adjacent each side wall thereof, Fig.14 (not shown). The walls of the cell may be lined with gum or rubber. |
