PURPOSE: To attain excellent acid resistance to prevent the deterioration due to an acid and the elution of lead by forming an alumina film using an alummina sol on the surface of a lead glass or a glass containing lead. CONSTITUTION: A low m.p. lead glass plate is coated by dipping it into an alumina sol solution of 4wt.% based on solid matter and pulling up it (dipping method). A surface protective thin film <=1μm in thickness is formed on the lead glass by drying the coated glass plate at room temp. and firing. The quantity of lead eluted is measured by dipping the glass plate in a 4% acetic acid aq. solution for 24hr, sampling the solution and using an atomic absorption spectrometer. As the result, the quantity of lead eluted from the coated sample is suppressed to about 1/100 of that from a non-coated sample for comparison.
