PURPOSE: To obtain an optical head which is suitable for use in a small-sized optical information recording and reproducing device of an ultra-high density and to improve economic efficiency. CONSTITUTION: This optical head is provided with a photodetector 2 for detecting laser beam emitted from a semiconductor laser 1 on the mirror side in one direction of this laser and is provided with a probe consisting of a semiconductor material as a means for generating evanescent light 4 on the side opposite to this mirror. The one end face itself of the semiconductor laser 1 may be formed as the probe. Information is recorded on a recording medium by the evanescent light 4 generated from the probe.
