The appliance has a measurement head (14; 42) a light beam transmitter (22, 24a-24f; 68.46) and at least one light beam detector (26a-26f.28a-28f; 70, 48) with a modulator (18; 44) forming a sensor (34; 40) with the head transmitting the light beam to the detector, the transmission characteristics being modulated by changes in position and strain of the object (12) monitored. The modulator is accommodated on the object, mechanically isolated from the head, and has at least one light guide element (56) with entrance (58) and exit (60) surfaces. The entrance surface faces the transmitter forming with it a first light transmission point. The exit surface faces the detector with which it forms a second transmission point.
