The device comprises a locking element (12) in the ignition lock which is connected by a cable to a swivelling blocking element (9) on the gear selector lever (1). The locking element and lever (1) interact through a guide path (19) on one of the two components and a guide element (18) on the other. The spring-loaded pressure rod (3) acts on the blocking element through an intermediate element (25) longitudinally guided in the selector lever. The blocking element is a lever whose one lever arm (17) interacts with the selector lever and whose other lever arm engages with the cable (11). The guide path (19) and guide element (18) interact over the entire swivel area of the selector lever.
