Moist soil contaminated with chlorinated aromatics is treated to dechlorinate the contaminants, using a known rotating kiln-type processor. A declorinating reagent, formed by contacting sodium hydroxide with polyethylene glycol, is mixed with oil and sprayed on the soil. In the kiln, the contaminants and reagent are gradually mixed and heated to about 315.degree.C to effect substantial dechlorination. The product is then further heated to about 620.degree.C to vaporize residual contaminants, oil and excess reagent. The vapours are collected, condensed and recycled to the mixing step.
|
