Process for selection of strains of bacteria from natural population

Parts of a culture medium are withdrawn discontinuously or continuously from a natural mixed bacteria population cultivated on a complex substrate and the bacteria found in them are killed or otherwise removed. The remaining culture medium is returned to the cultivation vessel. The procedure is repeated until the population is reduced to one to few strains of bacteria. Pref. a substrate is used whose constituents can be rapidly biologically decomposed. Bacteria are killed using ultrasound and sepn. is done by filtration.
