A virtual set video production facility, including one or more cameras (106, 108), a three-dimensional virtual renderer (110), and one or more compositors (122, 124), is controlled by a video production operator using familiar pushbutton operations on a switch console (138). The switch console (138) has pushbuttons which represent the different cameras, different virtual sets to be rendered, and/or various animations which can be activated within a selected set. A system controller (132) communicates set, camera and animation change requests from the switch console (138) to the renderer (110), and also controls all other switching which needs to be adjusted in the facility in response to such change requests. In another aspect, the system controller (132) detects faults in the operation of the virtual set renderer (110). When a fault is detected, the system controller (132) automatically reboots the renderer (110) and presents a substitute video feed to the background input of the compositor (122, 124) to thereby minimize any disruption of the viewing experience. In one embodiment, a frame store periodically captures the video output of the virtual set renderer (110), and if a fault is detected, the substitute feed is taken from the most recent frame stored by the frame store. |
