The method involves localising and identifying known particularities as being present in a digital signals at ordered points. The signals representing data from a material to be controlled. The method is independent of the position of the particularities and includes the following stages: (a) Gather the data from the material to be controlled in the form of ordered point digital signals. (b) Input the signals into a computer. (c) Process the signals to remove noise. (d) Detect the known particularities of the signals by using mathematical morphology filters. (e) Verify the detected particularities by using an expert system, contained within the computer, which recognises signal shape and by applying geometric criteria. (f) Output data concerning the identification and localisation of the known particularities.
