PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium suitable for use as a magnetic recording disk for a high capacity floppy disk or a still video floppy, a high capacity data tape or a tape for digital VTR. CONSTITUTION: A nonmagnetic layer and a magnetic layer are successively formed on a substrate. The dry film thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.05-0.3μm. The average major axis size (A) of ferromagnetic metal powder contained in the magnetic layer is 30-110nm and magnetic powder having a major axis size within a range of <=0.9A(nm) accounts for <=20% of the total number of the magnetic powder in the magnetic layer.
