The machine has an external rotor with a beaker shaped housing with an integral ventilation device. The housing has permanent magnets mounted on its inner walls and is inverted over the stator. The housing has outwardly protruding fan vanes (21) formed in its base, so that cooling air is drawn into the rotor housing (5) and forced through the stator (13). The housing consists of a tubular steel casing (23) and a lightweight base, e.g. of aluminium.
