The method involves using continuous conveyer (4) which carries clothes on hangers (2). For each point of attachment of the hangers, data relating to the garment hung is memorised. Sorting (8) is carried out according to preselected criteria and each hanging point is allocated a discharge code. The discharge list is split into N subgroups and downstream of the discharge point there are N parallel storage ranks (14A,14B...). The first articles in each sublist are scanned and the nearest to the discharge point is discharged and parked in the appropriate rank (14a,14B...). The next article in the sublist is made the new first and the process is repeated.
