The instrument panel has its front panel carrying different instrument layouts for different models in a range. The layout of the panel is encoded on the face of the panel but outside an area that is normally visible. The coding is by optically contrasting zones (F1,F2,F3,F4,F5) formed round the edges of each of the instruments. The zones are of differing colours or shapes, and each sub-assembly has at least three of these coded zones, and may have up to five. These zones are formed either on a flexible printed circuit or printed on by serigraphy. Each zone has orthogonal dimensions between 3 mm and 4 mm. A particular interconnection of printed conductors can be used to form the coded zones.
