Process for breaking down and compacting soil mass into less cohesive particles

Soil is removed from the ground (E) and processed by compacting before it is returned to the ground and used as a back-fill material. The novelty is that: (a) the uncompacted soil is introduced to a motor-driven soil-compacting assembly (2,3) through an inlet (22); (b) soil introduced to the soil-compacting assembly is first compacted and cut up to smaller less cohesive units which can be further compacted as a filling material (F); (c) the resulting compacted material (F) is discharged from the compactor (2,3) through an outlet (42a). The compacted soil particles may be mixed with further substances such as ash before they are returned to the ground.
