<p>PURPOSE: To obtain the scanner which is usable for both a far and a near operation range by providing a control means which detects which of a gripped and a fixed state the scanner is in and optimizes a decoding means according to the detection result. CONSTITUTION: The scanner has a hand grip part 32 which is convenient when the scanner 30 is used in the hand-held mode and a support opening part 33 for use in hand-free mode. An emission window 38 is formed in the front 35 of the scanner 30 and a scanning beam 36 is emitted out through it. A hatched scanning pattern 40 reads information out of the bar code symbol 42 of an article 44. The read information is transmitted to a POS device along a data line 34. Operation software in the scanner 30 is so programmed as to effectively operate for both two far and near separate operation ranges. Then a noncontact switch detects whether the scanner 30 is gripped by a user or fixed on a stand, and the scanner 30 selects one of the far and near operation ranges on the basis of the result.</p> |
