PURPOSE: To obtain a salicylic acid derivative without coloring even when using a SUS reaction vessel and useful as a color developer for a pressure- sensitive recording paper by reacting a salicylic acid derivative with a styrene using a multivalent metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION: (A) Salicylic acid derivative (preferably salicylic acid) is reacted with (B) a styrene (preferably styrene) in the presence of (C) a multivalent metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid (preferably a multivalent metal salt of salicylic acid or nucleus-substituted salicylic acid, preferably zinc salt) to obtain a salicylic acid derivative. By this method, a salicylic acid derivative comprising (i) 5-60wt.% salicylic acid derivative wherein 1mol of the component A is reacted with 1mol of the component B, (ii) 15-70wt.% salicylic acid derivative wherein 1mol of the component A is reacted with 2mol of the component B and (iii) 10-40wt.% salicylic acid derivative wherein 1mol of the component A is reacted with 3mol of the component B is obtained. The amount of the component C is preferably 1-100 pts.wt. to 100 pts.wt. based on the component A. |
