PURPOSE: To make it possible to obtain a wider visual field angle with high speed response without impairing a high contrast. CONSTITUTION: A lower phase difference plate 6 is further interposed into a liquid crystal display element 2 formed by interposing an upper phase difference plate 5 and STN liquid crystals 19 between a pair of polarizing plates 3 and 4. The thickness (d) of a liquid crystal layer is 2μmny>=nz. The wavelength dispersion value of the upper phase difference plate 5 is 1.05<=α<1.15 below the wavelength dispersion value of the lower phase difference plate 6. This plate has a refractive index of nx>nz> ny.
