PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain perpropionic acid from propionic acid and hydrogen peroxide by continuously and readily removing water in a reaction solution by azeotropic distillation together with a specified reaction solvent and preventing loss of the peroxide in the distillate due to distillation. CONSTITUTION:In production of perpropionic acid 8 by a reaction 1 between propionic acid 4 and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst, an alkyl ester of propionic acid, preferably a 1-3C saturated aliphatic univalent alcohol ester, especially ethyl propionate is used as a reaction solvent and water in the above-mentioned reaction solution is continuously removed by azeotropic distillation 2 together with the above-mentioned solvent. In that case, the reaction is carried out while keeping the concentration of the peroxide in the distilled water layer 7 to <=0.1wt.% preferably <=200wt.ppm to obtain the objective compound almost free from unreacted hydrogen peroxide in a high yield with industrial advantage. According to this method, a simple apparatus made of a general material can be used and danger in filtration separation operation can also be prevented. |
