An electric field sensor comprising an input optical, an incoming waveguide (5) formed on a substrate (4), two branched waveguides (6) branched from the waveguide (5) on the substrate (4) and having refractive indexes variable depending upon the intensity of the applied electric field; an output wave guide (7) joined with the waveguides (6) on the substrate (4); and a shield member (8) provided near the guides (6) to shield part of the waveguide (6) from electric fields. A reflecting mirror (16) may be formed on the substrate (4) so as to reflect light from the guides (6). The substrate (4) may be formed of a ferroelectric substance, in which the respective regions of the two waveguides (6) are polarized in opposite directions. <IMAGE> |
