PURPOSE: To prevent exceeding of a prescribed rotational speed set in accordance with a valve lift characteristic, even in the case of rapidly increasing an engine speed according to a speed change. CONSTITUTION: An internal combustion engine 100 has a variable poppet valve mechanism 1 capable of changing a valve acting angle, further to provide a manual transmission 101. When a clutch 102 is detected off by a clutch switch 106, from a car speed detected by a car speed sensor 109 and from a gear position of tending to perform a speed change from now on, a rotational speed just after the clutch is on is estimated. So as to prevent this estimated rotational speed from exceeding a prescribed rotational speed set in accordance with each acting angle, the engine is precorrected to a proper valve lift characteristic relating to the estimated rotational speed. |
