The salts are prepared by reacting a benshydrylamine of formula (I) (or a salt thereof) with clavulanic acid (or a salt thereof) in an organic solvent, and isolating the resulting salt. In formula (I), each of R<1> and R<2> is hydrogen (preferred) or an acceptable substituent. The clavulanic acid salts can be used in pharmaceutical formulations together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, and, optionally, a beta-lactam antibiotic.
