Bags with side pleats are formed by a machine with a supply roller and deflection rollers to feed a flat film web to a forming shoulder, and a filling pipe receiving the web formed into a film tube, in which a longitudinal and transverse weld seams are produced. A flat double spreading member (27) attached to the filling pipe and pointing away from it has a side pleat producer (41) between the individual spreading members (38,39) and a welding device (29) acts on both sides against the edge (5,6) of the film tube provided with side pleats (10,11). Welds are pref. made with a radiant heater and a cooling plate (40) with polytetrafluoroethylene coating is inserted in the side pleats acting against the welding device.
