Use of a cpd. having at least one partially non-neutralised sulphonic acid function as a bactericidal agent in topical compsns. is new. The acid is of formula R-SO3H (where R = aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon) pref. of formula (I). B = H or SO3H; 0 <= p <= 1, such that B = SO3H when p is 0; 0 <= n <= 4; D = one or more alkyl or alkoxy groups contg. 1-18C, halo or OH; A is pref. in the 3 or 4 position and is either -SO3H or a group of formula (i) or (ii); Y = H or -SO3H; R11 = H, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy or -SO3H, such that when B = H, R11 is -SO3H; R12 = H, 1-6C alkyl or 1-6C alkoxy; X = O, S, -NR-;R = H or 1-6C alkyl. |
