PURPOSE: To let a display surface be hardly colored, and also let a display be high in contrast by laminating two polarizing plates so as to be disposed in the surface side of a liquid crystal cell, and concurrently by shifting obliquely the transmission axes of the two polarizing plates mutually. CONSTITUTION: Two polarizing plates 22 and 23 are mutually laminated and disposed in the surface side of a liquid crystal cell 10. The colored polarizing plate 23 out of the two polarizing plates is disposed in the surface of the liquid crystal cell 10, and the neutral polarizing plate 22 is disposed in the surface of the colored polarizing plate 23. The twist angle of each liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal cell 10 is made roughly 240 deg., and the product value Δn.d of the refraction non-isotropy Δn of each liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal cell 10 and the thickness d of a liquid crystal layer is made roughly 850nm. The transmission axis of the colored polarizing plate 23 is shifted roughly by 20 deg.±5 deg. in the direction reverse to the twisted direction of each liquid crystal molecule with respect to the orientation direction of each liquid crystal molecule in the vicinity of the surface side substrate 11 of the liquid crystal cell 10, and the transmission axis of the neutral polarizing plate 22 is also shifted roughly by 20 deg.±5 deg. in the direction reverse to the twisted direction of each liquid crystal molecule with respect to the transmission axis of the colored polarizing plate 23. |
