The procedure produces a succession of commutation cycles in zero voltage mode. Each cycle applies a voltage pulse to each of several terminals (M"1,M"2) of an inductive load (S"). The current passed by each terminal is detected and the voltage pulse width adjusted at the end or beginning of the pulse, in the sense of the detected current. A static converter bridge (K"1) may be connected to a permanent source (QE") by an inductor (LA") in parallel with a series connected capacitor (CA") and interface segment (A"). The bridge may have an arm (K"1) for each load terminal (M"1), comprising an upstream segment (H"1) connected between an interface output (QA") and the terminal. A downstream segment (B"1) may be connected between the terminal and common earth (G").
