The invention pertains to a communications device (1), such as a telephone set or a facsimile device, which is provided with means (2, 7, 8) for the automatic output of an access code of a virtual private network (VPN) in response, for example, to the lifting of the handset (5). As a result, it is possible to dial abbreviated numbers of the virtual private network with said device, and the virtual private network can in fact be extended by simple means in an unrestricted manner. For application in combination with existing telephone or facsimile equipment (20), the invention also provides a series-connected unit (21) for the output of an access code.
