<p>PURPOSE: To produce a piston ring material excellent in breaking resistance particularly at the time of working a steel wire into a piston ring by curling mainly as for a 17Cr-base martensitic stainless steel and to provide a method for producing the same. CONSTITUTION: This steel wire for a piston ring excellent in breaking resistance is the one, in a desirable manner, having a chemical compsn. contg., by weight, >0.8 to <0.9% C, <=1.0% Si, <=1.0% Mn, 16 to 18% Cr, 0.8 to 1.2% of one or two kinds of V and Nb by Mo+1/2W, total 0.05 to 0.2% of one or two kinds of V and Nb, and the balance Fe with impurities, and in which, as for the surface of the steel wire, the remaining area ratio after the removal of oxidized scales or after pickling is regulated to <=2%. Moreover, as for the method for producing the same, a wire rod subjected to hot rolling is subjected to shaving to remove oxidized scales, which is thereafter subjected to drawing, or it is subjected to pickling and buffing or shot peening to regulate the remaining area ratio after the removal of oxidized scales or after the pickling to <=2%.</p> |
